She was described as beautiful and wearing her wedding dress. The story goes that Otto became enamored with the doll and named it after himself – Robert. Otto built the doll its own room in the attic complete with furniture, and toys, including the dolls own teddy bear. As Otto grew, he started blaming Robert for any mishaps that Otto himself had committed. Eventually the doll took the blame for everything that was negative in Otto’s life. It all started when Robert (Gene) Otto was 4 years old.

Inside there are 15 rooms with 12 foot ceilings. The home is made from virgin yellow pine and is sometimes described as West Indies Colonial Victorian. The Artist House is located at 534 Eaton Street. Thomas lived in the house for about 40 years and upon his death, his son, Eugene (Gene) Otto received the house. The Discovery Channel was intrigued enough to feature the Artist House on a program called “Would you Believe It” It reported that Anne has been seen descending the turret room staircase.

However, due to the historic significance of our authentic 1890’s truly original Victorian Guesthouse, the Inn is not completely wheelchair accessible. Removal of necessary physical barriers for complete accessibility is not readily achievable as such removal would threaten or destroy the historic significance of the property. This tree-top escape features a queen bed, mini-fridge, private bath, and Smart TV. This unique room overlooks our garden and the rooftops of Old Town, and is accessed via it’s own private stairs.

The home is a typical Queen Anne style characterized by the octagonal turret over two stories of bay windows and the outdoor staircases connecting the verandas. It was while painting and continuing his studies in Paris that he met Annette Parker, a native of Boston, who was studying music there at that time. After Anne finished her studies in Paris, the couple moved to New York for several years during which Anne performed at the celebrated Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center as an accomplished pianist. Several years later, the Otto’s moved back to Key West, where Anne dedicated her time to more domestic aspects of life at 534 Eaton Street, their home for the next 40 years. Gene died in 1974, and Anne two years later, but they live on in his art and in their beautiful and beloved house and garden. The spirit and the influence of Gene and Anne and the entire Otto family are still very much a part of the fabric and foundation of The Artist House, and the City of Key West as well. The building, antiques, garden, and “spirit” of The Artist House are a treasure for everyone to enjoy.
We do charge a one-time, nonrefundable fee of $50 per pet, per stay. Guests are responsible for any damages caused by the dog. Dogs may not be left unattended in rooms at any time. Emotional Support dogs are considered pets and fees apply. Please advise us during the reservation process that you will be bringing a pet.
Evidently, visitors and locals to the island seem to agree … with the exception of the “Hemingway House,” The Artist House is probably the most photographed and illustrated home in Key West. It is a centerpiece of conversation among the Historic Walking Tour, the Historic Bike Tour, and featured prominently on the world-famous “Conch Train” and “Trolley” tours. We are even on the Ghost Tour, although none of our thousands of guests have reported anything but a wonderful stay. The original “Parlor” to the house, this is another wonderful large room filled with antiques. Polished wood floors, sofa in seating area, Smart TV and en-suite.
